On Thursday morning at 0600 hours, Dave Povey, Tom Blackman, P.A. Ginsburg and I went out to sea from Mission Bay to visit La Jolla Canyon, then west to the extreme upper end of the Nine Mile Bank, about 12n. miles off shore.
A Peregrine Falcon flew overhead as soon as we exited the channel into the ocean. Things were fairly slow until we reached La Jolla Canyon where we saw our first fulmars and Sooties, and counted about 20 Black Storm-Petrels.
Sooty Shearwaters were plentiful throughout the trip – we counted more than 300 for the day plus 13 Pink-footed Shearwaters, eleven Fulmars and 90 or so Black Storm-Petrels.
Red-necked Phalarope were abundant on their northward migration to their Alaskan and arctic breeding grounds – most of the 450-500 we saw were in breeding plumage.
