Terry discovered pelagic birding by participating in the San Diego Christmas bird count and being assigned to the team of Dave Povey who has done the pelagic portions of the San Diego and Oceanside counts for 31 years, a total of 62 counts.

Now that Terry is retired and hungry to be birding at sea, he has had the opportunity to research boats for day and overnight expeditions. SoCalBirding.com was born.
When not on a boat or birding around the United States from his Hi-Lo travel trailer, Terry’s favorite San Diego birding spots are Point Loma, San Elijo Lagoon and seabirding by telescope from Stan’s Bench at LaJolla Cove.

Terry and his wife Ann Dunham (well, Ann mostly) operate the SeaBreeze-Inn Bed & Breakfast in the coastal community of Leucadia, a neighborhood in the north county town of Encinitas. Clean, fresh rooms with an ocean view and phenomenal breakfasts are available for $90 a night.

Terry Hunefeld began birding after moving his family to California in 1998 as CEO of a national training company headquartered in Carlsbad.
Over the next 8 years his 3 best friends died while still in their 50’s. Feeling as if he were buried alive behind drywall, Hunefeld retired at age 55 in April, 2007 to follow his bliss – birding.
He lives his motto: “Life is short. Bird often.” by being out in nature, looking at birds, every day.
