Stan is a widely recognized San Diego opera expert with a PH.D. in Psychological Anthropology. He can often be found pontificating on subjects ranging from Chaucer to Verdi, from ballet to theatre to film, from Byzantine politics to post-Lacanian psychoanalytic discourse. He's as happy to argue esoteric postmodern interpretations of Shakespeare or German opera singers of the 1920s as he is to pontificate on the underwing linings of alcids and the flight characteristics of rare antipodean tubenoses. Extremely susceptible to seasickness, Stan took to seabirding from a stable point at La Jolla Cove – now known as Stan’s Bench – where for the past 26 years he has spent thousands of hours staring through a telescope, humming to himself, while tourists ask him again and again and again, “See any whales?”
