In September of 1976, Debi Shearwater was awed by her first encounter with a Blue Whale. Since then, she has seen many ocean wonders: 800,000 feeding Sooty Shearwaters, the annual rafting of the thousands of storm-petrels, the delicate calling of a pair of Ancient Murrelets, breaching Baird's Beaked Whales, mating dophins, singing Humpbacks and newborn Gray Whales. She has even been eye-to-eye with a Sperm Whale!
Don Roberson quotes Debi on his "Who's Who In California Birding" website: "Magic seemed like a regular thing for me, or so it was in those early days. Those magical trips propelled me forward, as if riding a surfer's high wave. I organized a series of trips, which I offered to the general birding public in 1978. So began Shearwater Journeys."
Over the past 30 years, Debi has had a major impact on California birding. Her love of exploration and experiencing natural wonder has taken her all across the world. Her most successful expeditions have been to the Antarctic, the land of wonder. One of her two 2010 voyages is already sold out. The other has several cabins available as of this writing.
If you wish to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience, be on this expedition. Here are some details from Debi's website:
Shearwater Journeys, Inc., has chartered the M/V Professor Multanovskiy for a voyage to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, The Falkland Islands and Weddell Sea, January 5-24, 2010. The peak of the Austral summer, we shall witness a myriad of newly hatched penguin chicks, albatrosses and giant petrels on nests, snow petrels, prions, diving petrels, elephant seals, fur seals, leopard seals, and whales and dolphins.
The journey, with a unique itinerary focused on seabirds and other wildlife, is limited to 48 adventurers. Our itinerary includes searching in the Weddell Sea for the Lord of the penguins - the Emperor! A brilliant assemblage of leaders will accompany this expedition, all of them having decades of seabirding experience.
Adding the Chile pre-trip, will enable the adventurer to have the possibility of seeing half of the world's species of penguins, and all of the world's species of diving petrels! We have put it all together in one magnificent voyage - the leadership, the itinerary, the wildlife at the peak of the Antarctic season, and a small, comfortable, reliable ship.
Only 7 cabins and 1 private single (sharing female) remain available. Contact Debi directly for more information at (831) 637-8527. More information including the entire itinerary and more photos and details are on her website Shearwater Journeys website
