Northern Fulmar Irregular and irruptive. Uncommon to common winter visitor Oct - April. A few may be present in deep water all year (McGrath & Feenstra, 2005). Seen often on Searcher deep water pelagics April - September, e.g. (150) 18 Apr 2003; (186) 26 Apr 2003; (210) 23 Apr 2004; (5) 9 Sep 2004; (1) 7 Sep 2005 (Searcher Trip Reports, 2003-2007).
2007: 32 from Condor Express 21 Apr (eBird). One seen from Condo Express 21 Jul (CalBirds). 160 seen from shore off Point Vicente Los Angeles 22 Nov (Fisher, Mar/Apr 2008). 18 offshore San Diego 5 Dec (Hunefeld, SDBirds).
2008: 2 seen between San Diego and the Coronados Islands 19 Jan (Hunefeld, SDBirds). A total of 7 seen on two Bird Festival trips between San Diego and Coronados Islands 9-10 Feb (Hunefeld, SDBirds). Three off Baja Mex at US border 10 May (NAB, Erickson, et al).
2009: On 17 Jan "a few hundred" were west of Port San Luis (Edell, SLOcobirding); 23 there a week later 24 Jan. One at La Jolla 26 Jan (Keller, SDBirds), one there 9 Feb (SDBirds) and one 25 Feb (Lehman, SDBirds). 454 off Santa Barbara 1 Mar from Condor Express. Three San Diego bird festival pelagic trips aboard Grande 5-8 Mar produced one on 8 Mar. Three were off La Jolla 15 Mar. 63 from a day trip aboard Grande 4 Apr included 43 in US waters and 20 in Mexico. 110 were near the Channel Islands 16 May. First of season for SoCal were reported by mid-Sept and numerous off shore by November (NAB, McCaskie and Garrett). 131 off Santa Barbara from Condor Express 15 Nov.
2010: 3 offshore on the 26th annual San Diego New Year's Day pelagic. 8 off San Diego 21 Jan. One at Nine Mile Bank 7 Mar on San Diego Bird Festival pelagic day trip. One off San Diego 14 Mar. One off San Diego 14 Mar. 61 from Condor Express May 1. 3 from Grande May 15-17. Two from Searcher May 29-31. 5 from Condor Express June 12. One from Condor Express Jul 31. 3 from Searcher Sep 7-9. First from Pt Loma 8 Nov (NAB, McCaskie and Garrett). 14 from Grande Nov 13. From La Jolla: 2 on Nov 11, 5 on Nov 21, several on Nov 22 (Paul Lehman, SDBirds). 350 from Montana de Oro San Luis Obispo 26 Nov (NAB, McCaskie and Garrett).
2011: The San Diego Bird Festival had 4 day trips to the Nine Mile Bank and Coronados Islands Mar 3-6 with a high count of 4 on Mar 6. 9 were seen between Santa Barbara and the Rodriguez Dome from the Condor Express on Apr 30. 2 were reported between the Nine Mile Bank and Thirty Mile Bank San Diego from Grande May 14. One seen from Searcher May 28-30 between the Thirty Mile Bank and San Clemente Island.
