PHALAROPES
 
Red Phalarope
Red Phalarope  Irregular fall, winter and spring visitor.  Most likely seen in numbers in fall, but a few can be found in winter and spring on most pelagic trips.  The most pelagic of the 3 phalaropes, rarely found on land except when driven in by storms (Unitt, 2004).   

2008:  2 at Nine Mile Bank 19 Jan (SDBirds).  140 from Grande off San Diego 10-11 May.  6 at San Juan Seamount and 11 at Cortez Bank from Searcher 3 Sep.
 3 at Nine Mile Bank 13 Sep (Povey, SDBirds).  2 off Dana Point 20 Sep. 2 at Nine Mile Bank off San Diego 13 Oct (SDBirds). 2000 off shore San Diego from Grande 2 Nov.  3 on San Diego Christmas bird count 20 Dec.

2009:  3 from Condor Express 1 Mar.  10 off San Diego 7 Mar from Grande. 6 off San Diego 20 Mar. 11 off San Diego from Grande 9-10 May. 40 off San Diego from Grande 24 Aug. 247 from Searcher 7-11 Sep. 142 from Grande 10-11 Oct. 12 from Condor Express 15 Nov. 20 off San Diego 23 Nov.  3 off San Diego 3 Dec.

2010:  9 off San Diego 1 Jan. One off San Diego 21 Jan. Three on 3 day-trips 4-7 Mar on San Diego Bird Festival.  105 from Condor Express May 1.  96 from Grande May 16-17.  85 from Condor Express Jun 12 and 57 Jul 31. 18 from Grande Aug 16-17.  1500 from Searcher Sep 6-9. 15 from Grande Oct 2-4; 56 on Oct 9; 92 on Nov 13.  

2011:  240 were seen between Santa Barbara and the Rodriguez Dome from the Condor Express on Apr 30.  6 were seen near the Nine Mile Bank off San Diego on May 6.  3 were reported between the Nine Mile Bank and Thirty Mile Bank San Diego from Grande May 14.

Red-necked Phalarope

Red-necked Phalarope  Very common spring and fall visitor.  Peak abundance is mid April – early June and again August – October.  

2007:  4 from Condor Express 21 Apr (eBird).  57 from Condor Express 21 Apr (eBird).  350 off San Diego 22 Aug (SDBirds, Povey).

2008:   First 2008 report: 1 off San Diego 25 Mar (Povey, SDBirds). 4 off San Diego 13 Apr (Povey, SDBirds). 500 from Grande off San Diego 10-11 May.  140 seen between Mission Bay and the 30 Mile Bank 26 Jul 2008 (Povey, SDBirds).   730 off San Diego (Povey, SDBirds).  200 off Dana Point 20 Sep. 140 off San Diego 13 Oct (Povey, SDBirds).  30 off San Diego 1-2 Nov from Grande. No more San Diego reports in 2008.

2009:  First 2009 report: 6 off San Diego 20 Mar.  12 from Grande off San Diego 4 Apr.  450 off San Diego 30 Apr.  68 from Grande off San Diego 9-10 May.  45 off San Diego from Grande 16 May.  550 around the Channel Islands 16 May. 5 off San Diego 21 May.  32 off San Diego 9 Jul.  43 off San Diego 13 Jul. 27 off San Diego from Grande 24-25 Aug.  240 off San Diego 3 Oct on Grande day trip. 145 off San Diego 10-11 Oct from Grande.  No more San Diego reports in 2009. 

2010:  None reported until May 1 when 1855 were seen from Condor Express. 133 from Grande May 15-17.  2 from Searcher May 29-31.  120 and 190 seen by Dave Povey on Jul 18 and Jul 31. 175 from Condor Express on Jul 31. 276 from Grande Aug 16-17.  75 from Grande Sep 3.  220 from Searcher Sep 6-8.  1273 from Grande Oct 2-4. 

2011:  4000 were seen between Santa Barbara and the Rodriguez Dome from the Condor Express on Apr 30.  6 were seen near the Nine Mile Bank off San Diego on May 6. More than 100 were reported between the Nine Mile Bank and Thirty Mile Bank San Diego from Grande May 14.
