(San Diego) On Sunday, 18 July, Dave Povey, Barbara Carlson, Curtis Marantz, and myself went offshore, from Mission Bay northwest off La Jolla, then to about 14 miles offshore, then down the outer side of the Nine-Mile Bank to the Mexican border, and then back to Mission Bay. The three best birds were all about 13 miles west of northern Point Loma: an immature LONG-TAILED JAEGER (rare in mid-summer and closer to shore than usual), an Ashy Storm-Petrel (scarce and closer to shore than usual), and a Rhinoceros Auklet (very rare in summer). The number of Cassin's Auklets was surprisingly high for summer. Good numbers of shearwaters were on the Bank. Totals for the trip included:
Pink-footed Shearwater: 140 Sooty Shearwater: 1000 Black Storm-Petrel: 75 ASHY STORM-PETREL: 1 Red-necked Phalarope: 120 Least Tern: 2 (about 13 miles offshore) Elegant Tern: 800 LONG-TAILED JAEGER: 1 Cassin's Auklet: 45 RHINOCEROS AUKLET: 1
