Your email address is not collected and databased when you make a reservation for a pelagic trip in Southern California. Trips that do collect your email don’t have it readily available for urgent notifications. In the event of trip cancellation due to under-subscription or weather, there is no reliable way to notify participants except by telephone, which in 2007 turned out to be a less than perfect system where some participants did not receive word of trip cancellations.
The Yahoo group SoCalBirding Notification Service has been created to instantly communicate urgent or important information to participants of all pelagic trips in Southern California regarding: (1) real-time weather updates for upcoming trips (2) trip cancellations due to weather or under-subscription and (3) alerts of newly added pelagic trips. Only Todd McGrath, Jon Feenstra or Terry Hunefeld will be able to send messages to the group, and only regarding the topics above. We don’t anticipate that this service will send more than six announcements in any given year.
